INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 22, 2026) – Indiana Right to Life publishes a letter it sent today to President Donald Trump from Indiana state legislators addressing the Hyde Amendment.
“This letter to President Trump speaks to a truth Hoosiers hold sacred: protecting unborn children should be an uncompromising stance, and that abortion should never be funded with taxpayer dollars,“ said Indiana Right to Life President Mike Fichter. “Indiana’s ‘love them both’ ethic rejects abandoning the U.S. policy of banning the use of taxpayer dollars to end a baby’s life. Unborn babies – the most vulnerable among us — need clear defenders, and Senator Brown, Representative Prescott and their colleagues are boldly carrying that torch for all of Indiana. We thank them for their continued courage and unwavering commitment to uphold the right to life.”
The letter was sent in response to President Trump telling U.S. House Republicans on January 6, “Now you have to be a little flexible on Hyde. You know that you got to be a little flexible.”
Today 29 Indiana state legislators joined Senator Liz Brown and Representative J.D. Prescott in their message to President Trump, calling for him to uphold the Hyde Amendment. The law has been a long-time U.S. policy, barring taxpayer dollars from being used to fund abortions.
Indiana legislators reminded the president that “Millions of lives have been saved because of the Hyde Amendment, which has historically been a bipartisan solution.” They also sent a warning that should the president or national Republicans compromise on Hyde, voter “ire would have trickle-down effects in states across the nation at the ballot box”.
