A letter from Indiana legislators to President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance was wired to the White House on October 29 urging immediate action on the abortion drug mifepristone and all generic versions pending “a comprehensive and transparent review of the drug’s safety data.”
The letter, co-authored by Sen. Tyler Johnson and Rep. J.D. Prescott, is cosigned by Lieutenant Gov. Micah Beckwith and 52 other state legislators.
The letter states, “Your leadership in restoring protections for the unborn and upholding states’ rights has been a beacon of hope and we call on you to direct HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Dr. Martin Makary to take immediate, decisive action to address this critical issue.”
The action steps called for include:
Immediately suspend the distribution and approval of mifepristone and all generic versions pending a comprehensive and transparent review of the drug’s safety data.
Reinstate stringent in-person dispensing requirements and other REMS safeguards to protect women from coercion, misinformation, and life-threatening complications.
Ensure federal policies respect and enforce state pro-life laws, preventing the interstate shipment of abortion drugs into jurisdictions with protective legislation.
“We applaud these Indiana legislators for calling on President Trump to take decisive action on abortion drugs,” states Indiana Right to Life President and CEO Mike Fichter. “Indiana is specifically impacted by the illegal mailing of abortion drugs into our state. This trafficking needs to stop, and the quickest way to get there is for President Trump to apply the full weight of the FDA and HHS in suspending distribution of mifepristone and its generic versions.”
