Indiana Right to Life applauds the 7 members of Indiana’s congressional delegation who today cosigned a letter with 192 other members of Congress in opposition to any Democrat attempt to repeal the Hyde Amendment which restricts most taxpayer funding for abortions.

The letter states in part, “The Hyde Amendment alone has saved the lives of over 2 million innocent babies 5 and continues to protect the conscience rights of a vast majority of Americans opposed to publicly funded abortions. We cannot allow the Hyde Amendment and other important pro-life safeguards to be decimated by Congressional Democrats. Accordingly, we pledge to vote against any government funding bill that eliminates or weakens the Hyde Amendment or other current-law, pro-life appropriations provisions.”

Rep. Jim Banks is a lead signer on the letter as chairman of the Republican Study Committee, joining  Rep. Larry Bucshon, Rep. Jim Baird, Rep, Trey Hollingsworth, Rep. Greg Pence, Rep. Victoria Spartz, and Rep. Jackie Walorski.

“Despite decades of consensus on this issue, radical Democrats have signaled they no longer have an interest in protecting the conscience rights of millions of Americans who do not want their hard-earned money used to pay for abortions,” states Rep. Banks.  “My colleagues and I demand congressional leaders protect the ban on taxpayer-funded abortions and save the Hyde Amendment.”

“We are thankful these Hoosier members of Congress are committed to protecting the unborn and to fighting to keep our taxpayer dollars from paying for abortions,” states Indiana Right to Life President and CEO Mike Fichter.  “The Democrat frenzy to support abortion is at a fever pitch.  We need leaders like these, now more than ever, to stand firm in Congress.”
